Hong Kong police Detain 15 in New shopping mall protests

Hong Kong riot police detained at least 15 individuals in clashes on Saturday with heaps of pro-democracy protesters, who targeted a mall close to the boundary with China to show against mainland shoppers and tourists.

The brand new unrest finished a short calm after protesters had fought riot police in shopping malls and roads of commercial districts throughout the town for 3 days over the Christmas period.

On Saturday afternoon, masked plain-clothed officers wielding batons detained 14 individuals, such as a 14-year-old woman, who had been protesting within the mall at Sheung Shui district, forcing stores to close and harassing shoppersa reporter at the scene stated.

After the police left, a few protesters remained on a footbridge linking the mall into a subway station and plagued passers-by they believed were mainland Chinese tourists. Another man was detained by riot police in a subsequent episode within the mall, his head covered in blood.

In Kowloon Bay

Similar protests and clashes took place in a mall at Kowloon Bay district, where quite a few individuals were detained Saturday evening.

Blood and a black mask have been viewed by a reporter on the ground where plain-clothed authorities subdued protesters at the mall.

In the past few decades, Sheung Shui has been swamped by a massive influx of mainlanders and concurrent dealers trying to bypass Chinese taxation, angering many taxpayers who’ve seen their regional stores shifted to appeal to the people.

Hong Kong’s many malls have become frequent protest places as protesters attempt to induce economic disruption in their drive for greater democratic freedoms and police responsibility. The previous month had witnessed a fall in violence and protests following pro-democracy candidates obtained a landslide in local elections. However, with Beijing and town leaders denying additional concessions, rallies and clashes reignited over the Christmas period.
