The quake hit only after 4 pm local time (0600GMT) in a thickness of 31 kilometres (19 kilometers ) a few 122 kilometres (75 kilometers ) south of Kokopo, the capital of PNG’s East New Britain province, the USGS said.
Geoscience Australia senior seismologist Trevor Allen said coastal communities close to the epicentre could have felt”very solid ground vibration” since the tremblor was near the coast.
However, he said, that the region has been relatively sparsely populated and elastic construction design locally aided restrict exposure to harm from quakes.
“The East New Britain area is among the most seismically active areas on the planet and would normally tend to obtain an earthquake of this size one or two times annually,” he told AFP.
Miriam Koikoi, a secretary at Kokopo Beach Bungalow Resort, told AFP the vibration was”not that large” and she hadn’t seen any indications of damage.
PNG sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, and it can be a hotspot for seismic activity because of friction between tectonic plates.
Its remote and mountainous terrain means that it often takes a few days for information regarding harm from quakes to achieve officials and aid agencies.
